Project Brief Type: Education Area (m2): Budget: Features:

Designed by ARCO2 using a unique pre-fabricated modular straw bale system. The building is located on a restricted rural site adjacent to Whitstone Primary School. Designed to accommodate 16 pupils and completed in July 2010 the building is sited next to an existing portable building, but manages to engage with the natural garden play area to the east allowing secure free flow and making the most of the natural, rural, semi wooded setting. The building has a north west facing roof slope with roof lights inserted into the roof construction to provide constant natural daylight into spaces below. The roof lights are fully automated to provide natural stack effect ventilation. The building’s roof is partly sedum to encourage wildlife and be sympathetic within the landscape, and partly natural slate with clay ridge tiles to match existing buildings. There are large glazed areas providing interaction with external areas and countryside views.
